This month Enviro Meet was held on 29th April, 2012 at Hotel Tamil Nadu, Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. Special address given by Mr.K.Vijayanandan, Deputy Director, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve on 'Tribal Development through Community based Eco-tourism - Parambikulam Experience'. Mr. C.R. Jayaprakash, Assistant Professor of PSG College of Arts and Sciencepresided over the programme.

Mr. Vijayanandan said that Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has many firsts to its credit, made possible through the participation of tribal people. Being a most protected forest area, the reserve has nearly five endemic flora varieties, he said.

Ever since the Joint Forest and Participatory Management was introduced, the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has not witnessed even a single incident of poaching since 2004 and since 2007 there had not been a single incident of forest fire.

உலக வன நாளை முன்னிட்டு "ஓசை' சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்பின் சார்பில் சிறப்பு 'சூழல் சந்திப்பு' 25.03.2012 அன்று மாலை 6:30 மணியளவில் கோவை காந்திபுரம் தமிழ்நாடு உணவக அரங்கில் நடைபெற்றது.

திரு. மகேந்திரா ராம்தாஸ், நிர்வாக இயக்குனர், மகேந்திர பம்ப்ஸ் அவர்கள் தலைமை வகித்தார்.

இதில், திரு. ச. சசிகுமார்,இ.வ.ப., மண்டல பாஸ்போர்ட் அலுவலர், கோவை அவர்கள் 'மனித-வன உயிரின மோதல்கள்- எனது அனுபவம்' எனும் தலைப்பில், வன அதிகாரியாக பணியாற்றியபோது, ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவங்களைப் பற்றி, கூறியதாவது:

யானை-மனித இன மோதலுக்கு, எல்லையோர மக்களிடம் உள்ள, அறியாமையே முக்கிய காரணம்; மனித இனம், யானைகளை புரிந்து கொள்ளும் வரை, எதை கொண்டு விரட்டினாலும், வீண்தான் என பேசினார்.

The ERC (Environment Impact Assessment Resource and Response Centre) cell of Nilgiris had organised an orientation program on EIA and National Green Tribunal in Kotagiri last Saturday, March 17, 2012. On behalf of Osai, Kalidasan, Avainayagan, Thenmurugakani, and lawyer Nicolas attended the one-day program. The venue was Keystone Foundation, Kotagiri.

The program started with Samir Mehta and Latha Anantha discussing the WGEEP report's recommendations. The report can be downloaded from Goa Foundation. Pandurang Hegde informed about the 25th SWG Meet to be held from November 29th to December 1st in Maharashtra and Archana Godbole invited to attend the same.

இன்று (21.03.2012) உலக வன நாள். அதனை முன்னிட்டு சிறப்பு நிகழ்ச்சியாக தமிழ்நாடு வனத்துறை-கோவை வனக்கோட்டம் மற்றும் ஓசை அமைப்பு இணைந்து அரசு மேல் நிலைப்பள்ளி , அசோகபுரத்தில் உலக வன நாள் விழா நடத்தினர்.

கோவை மண்டல வனப் பாதுகாவலர் முனைவர் வெ.த.கந்தசாமி அவர்கள் பள்ளி வளாகத்தில் மரக்கன்றுகளை நட்டு நிகழ்ச்சியை தொடங்கிவைத்தார்.

அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்ற வன நாள் விழாவிற்கு தலைமையேற்று மண்டல வனப் பாதுகாவலர் முனைவர் வெ.த.கந்தசாமி உரையாற்றினார். அவரது உரையில்,

"வனநாள் விழாவை ஓர் அரசு பள்ளியில் நடத்துவதில் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன். இந்தியா, குறிப்பாக தமிழகம் ஓர் அறிவுசார்ந்த மக்களை கொண்டதாக மாறியிருக்கிறது. இருபத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வனம், சுற்றுச் சூழல் சம்மந்தமாக விழிப்புணர்வு அன்றைய மாணவச் சமுதாயத்திடம் இருந்ததில்லை. இன்று விழிப்புணர்வு அதிகரித்திருக்கிறது. இன்று நமது பொருளாதாரம் வளர்ந்திருக்கிறது. வாழ்க்கைத் தரம் உயர்ந்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால் சுற்றுச்சூழலும் இயற்கை வளங்களும் சீரழிந்திருக்கின்றன. பணப்புழக்கம் அதிகரித்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால் தண்ணீருக்கு தட்டுப்பாடு நிலவுகிறது. காற்று மாசடைந்துள்ளது உள்ளது. மரங்களையும், காடுகளையும் பற்றி சிந்திக்க இது சரியான நேரம். மரக்கன்றுகளை நடுவது ஒரு தொடக்கம்தான். ஆனால் குறைந்தது, இரண்டு வருடங்களாவது அவற்றை தண்ணீர் ஊற்றி பராமரித்து வளர்க்க வேண்டும்.

- A Roosting Site for above 10000 wetland birds

With ever increasing pressure on wetlands and water bodies in the state, yet another issue has recently caught the eyes of environmentalists here. Recently a tender was released by the state government for cutting down Prosopis juliflora (an invasive flora) in a 206 hectare area which serves as an ideal habitat for many birds and mammals at the Vattamalai Odaikarai Dam region near Vellakoil in Tirupur District. This drew a strong opposition from the local people of the Vattamalai region and a one day fasting was observed by the people at Vellakoil, as a show of opposition for the tender and cutting down of these trees.

To know more about the issue and to study the possible environmental impact, OSAI team visited the Vattamalai Odaikarai Dam and the surrounding Thorny Bush Ecosystem. After meeting the local people and making a thorough study in the region, finally we came to a conclusion that this tender if implemented would have a devastating effect on the birds, animals & environment in the vicinity. The following were the observations made.

ஓசை சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்பின் மாதாந்திரக் கூட்டம் 'சூழல் சந்திப்பு' 26.02.2012 அன்று மாலை 6:30 மணியளவில் கோவை காந்திபுரம் தமிழ்நாடு உணவக அரங்கில் நடைபெற்றது.

இதில், திரு.வே.திருநாவுக்கரசு,இ.வ.ப, மாவட்ட வன அலுவலர், கோவை கோட்டம் அவர்கள் 'காடுகளைப் பாதுகாப்பது யாருக்காக ?' என்ற தலைப்பில் சிறப்புரையாற்றினார்.

திரு.வே.திருநாவுக்கரசு அவர்கள் பேசியதாவது:

இந்திய வன அளவீட்டு அமைப்பு (Forest Survey of India) இரண்டாண்டிற்கு ஒரு முறை நம் காடுகளின் நிலை எப்படி இருக்கிறது என்பதை ஆராய்ந்து அறிக்கை தருகிறது. அதன்படி 2009-2011ம் ஆண்டுகளில் தமிழ்நாட்டில் 287 சதுர கிலொமீட்டர் அளவுக்கு பசுமைப் பரப்பு அதிகரித்திருப்பதாக அறிவித்துள்ளது. இது நமக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியான செய்தி. தனிநபர்கள், சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்புகள், கல்வி நிறுவனங்கள் மற்றும் பொது அமைப்புகள் ஆகியவை காடுகளுக்கு வெளியே தொடர்ந்து செய்து வரும் மரம் வளர்ப்புப் பணியே இதற்குக் காரணமாகும். கோவை மாவட்டத்தில் 2007-2009 ஆண்டுகளில் 5ச.கிமீ குறைந்து போனதாக கணக்கிடப்பட்டிருந்தது, ஆனால் தற்போது 2 ச.கிமீ பசுமைப்பரப்பு அதிகரித்திருப்பதை அறிக்கை தெரிவிக்கிறது.
