On Saturday, Feb 12, 2011 Mr. Kalidasan got a call from Senthil (Councillor) saying that a snake was found near ITI Nagar behind Cheran Nagar in Kavundampalayam.

Nirmal doing his M.Sc in Software and Keerthi, studying B.Sc Agriculture, who have rich experience in catching snakes, managed to catch the snake and found it to be a Russell's viper measuring three feet coming under Schedule II of the Wild Life Protection Act.

கோவை மாநகராட்சிக்குச் சொந்தமான "ரிசர்வ் சைட்'டில் இருந்த எட்டு மரங்கள் வெட்டி 17.02.2011 அன்று வீழ்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.கோவை நகரில் மரக்கன்றுகளை வளர்க்க வனத்துறை, சிறுதுளி, ஓசை, ராக் உள்ளிட்ட பல் வேறு சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்புகள் பெரும்பாடுபட்டு வருகின்றன. மறுபுறத்தில், சத்தமே இல்லாமல் அரசுத்துறைகளாலும், தனியார் நிறுவனங்களாலும், தனி நபர்களாலும் மரங்கள் வெட்டி வீழ்த்தப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேயிருக்கின்றன. கடந்த இரு வாரங்களுக்கு முன்பாக, ரேஸ்கோர்ஸ் பகுதியிலிருந்த பழமையான இரண்டு மரங்கள் வெட்டி அகற்றப்பட்டன.

கோவை நகரில் மரங்களை வெட்டுவதைத் தடுக்க சிறப்பு நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ள கோவையின் பல்வேறு சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்புகளின் நிர்வாகிகளும் சேர்ந்து, கலெக்டர் உமாநாத்தை சந்தித்து மனுக் கொடுத்தனர். அதன் அடிப்படையில், அரசுக்கு சில பரிந்துரைகளை மாவட்ட நிர்வாகமும் அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளது.இந்த முயற்சிகள் நடந்தாலும் மரங்கள் வெட்டுவதும் தொடர்கிறது.

ஓசை சுற்றுச் சூழல் அமைப்பின் நவம்பர் மாத சூழல் சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி, கோவை, காந்திபுரம் தமிழ்நாடு உணவக அரங்கில் கடந்த 28.11.10 ஞாயிறு மாலை நடைபெற்றது. இந்நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு சமூகசேவகர் திரு.ஆர்.வி.சி. நடராஜ் தலைமை தாங்கினார். இதில் 'பாம்புகள் - பயம் வேண்டாம்' என்ற தலைப்பில் சென்னையைச் சேர்ந்த சூழலியலாளர் திரு. ஜே. ஆனந்த் சிறப்புரையாற்றினார்.

பாம்புகள் சுமார் 13 கோடி (130மில்லியன்) ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு பல்லி இனத்திலிருந்து பரிமாண வளர்ச்சியில் தோன்றியவைகள். பாம்பின் மிகப்பழமையான புதைப் படிவம் சகாரா பாலைவனத்தில் கிடைத்துள்ளது. உலகில் சுமார் 2700 வகையான பாம்புகள் உள்ளன. இந்தியாவில் 20 வகையான கடற்பாம்புகளையும் சேர்த்து 270 வகை பாம்புகள் உள்ளன. இவற்றில் 62 வகை பாம்புகள் விசத்தன்மை கொண்டவை.

Conservation of fauna and flora being more important than ever before, OSAI organised its 8th annual photographic exhibition 'UYIR NIZHAL 2010' on the fauna and flora of the Western Ghats in VOC park, Coimbatore from October 9th to 18th, 2010 as a part of the World Wildlife Week Celebration.

The event was inaugurated by Mr.A.S. Balanathan, I.F.S, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Tamilnadu Forest Department; the Coimbatore District Collector Dr. P. Umanath, I.A.S, presided over the function; Dr. Ravi Chellam, Country Director, WCS-India Program, delivered the keynote address. Mr.S.S. Venkatesan, President, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis felicitated the event.

Photographs on the various varieties of fauna and flora, taken by some prominent photographers, members, non-members, first-timers and individuals were displayed. Also, photographs taken by young students were on display to encourage and nurture young nature lovers and conservationists.

The photographs were sectioned into different categories for the ease of viewing and understanding for the public. Insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals.

Special gallery for tigers was put up which not only displayed their majestic photographs but also important facts about their birth, territory, hunting, parental care, habits and challenges they face. This helped the public to understand their lifestyle.
