An elephant aged between 15-18 years was killed by electrocution near Sirumugai. The incident took place in the farm field of Ammavasai, resident of Vedar Colony village near Sirumugai. The female elephant, crossed the boundary of the Sirumugai forest range in Coimbatore forest division to raid the banana plantation. Forest Veterinary Officer Dr. Manoharan conducted postmortem and confirmed the cause of death as electrocution. The death resulted due to electrocution from a poorly operated electric fence that was used to protect the banana fields. On inquiring, the local villagers said the female was part of a herd of three elephants that was frequently seen in this area. |
