![]() A fresh water wetland bird, Common Coot (Fulica atra) was rescued by Eco Club volunteers of PSG College of Arts and Science (PSG CAS) and handed over to the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo at V.O.C. Park on Tuesday. This bird is found in plenty in the tanks of Coimbatore. On Monday evening it was found at Vidya Nagar, near the PSG CAS. Dr.M.Arumugham, Director of Master of International Business, PSG CAS found the bird struggling to fly. He rescued it and kept it safely in his house and informed C.R. Jayaprakash, Eco Club Coordinator and our active member. With support from OSAI, the bird was identified as a Common Coot. It is classified under Least Concern category by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “The Coot should have come from the nearest wetland, Singanallur. It might have got attracted by the sounds of domestic ducks which were reared at a nearby house” opined M.Mohan Kumar, an ornithologist from OSAI. With the help of Eco Club Volunteer E.K.Binoj, the bird was handed over to the Corporation Zoo on Tuesday after informing the issue to Coimbatore Forest Range Officer Soundarrajan. |
