Tuesday, July 7, 2009, Coimbatore Our OSAI activist A. Sivakumar of Adventure Shoppe saw a person selling 40 wild birds with a cage at Ram Nagar in Coimbatore city. The birds were sold in the name of love birds after painting them. The seller was handed over to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department along with the birds and case was booked under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. All the birds were rescued on Monday afternoon and were later freed in the presence of Team OSAI at Thondamuthur. The birds rescued included Red Avadavat (Amandava amandava), Black-headed munia (Lonchura Malacca), Scaly-breasted munia (Lonchura punctulata), Rose-ringed parakeet (Pisttacula krameri). Preliminary inquiry revealed that the birds were captured near Trichy. |
